Macleod
Macleod is a suburb between Heidelberg and Bundoora within the Banyule and Darebin City local government areas approx. 14km northeast of Melbourne CBD. Its traditional landowners are the Wurundjeri People, while the suburb was named after Malcolm Macleod who acquired land in the area in 1903. He later sold 75 acres along the railway line to the government for the construction of the Mont Park Psychiatric Hospital with the condition that a railway station be built in exchange. Macleod railway station eventually opened in 1911.
Close to the station is Victoria Cross Estate, a historic subdivision where all the streets are named after VC recipients from Victoria or Tasmania. Today, the estate has a mix of original weatherboard houses, modern homes and apartments. The proximity to the station and nearby La Trobe University continues to ensure homes in this estate remain among the area’s most desirable.
LA Trobe University campus in Bundoora is slated for a multi-billion dollar revitalisation expected to provide more than 20,000 new jobs over 10 years and generate $3.5 billion in gross regional product in the next decade. As a result, more permanent housing and rental properties will be needed for the anticipated influx of staff and students.
Macleod has some excellent sport and recreation facilities including Macleod Park, home to both the local Australian Rules and cricket teams plus a netball stadium in Somers Avenue and the Macleod Recreation Centre. The suburb is serviced by supermarkets at Watsonia, Lower Plenty, Rosanna and Bundoora, and within a short drive of Northland Shopping Centre and Bundoora Square.
The suburb’s beautiful parks, running paths, cycleways and golf courses – most notably Strathallan on Bingo Street - combined with its tree-lined streets and easy access to the CBD provide further appeal for young families, city professionals and investors.
