Mount Kembla
Described as a sub-tropical belt of rainforest, Mount Kembla is a lush suburb and mountain ideally situated at the foot of the sweeping Illawarra Escarpment.Located 14 kilometres inland from Wollongong, Mount Kembla is a semi-rural township with a historic past. The 1902 Mount Kembla Mine disaster that devastated the Mount Kembla Colliery, not to mention the town, is considered one of the worst disasters in Australian history. The Mount Kembla of today has bounced back and is a quaint town with a strong community spirit. The heritage of Mount Kembla can be felt in every nook and cranny of the township, from the heritage-listed Mount Kembla Village Hotel to the historic Mount Kembla Post Office and General Store.
The picturesque Mount Kembla Mountain is the suburb’s most attractive asset. Overlooking Wollongong and attached to the equally breathtaking Illawarra Escarpment, Mount Kembla is 534 metres above sea level and one of the most visited attractions in the region. The best way to enjoy Mount Kembla in all its glory is along the Mount Kembla Summit and Ring Track. The 12.8-kilometre walking and cycling trail offers magnificent views of the Illawarra Escarpment and the NSW coast as well as the abundance of flora and fauna native to the region.
With plenty of local and nearby attractions to keep locals occupied, Mount Kembla is an attractive countryside town that’s just a stone’s throw away from bustling Wollongong.
