Family holidays are an opportunity to reconnect, unwind, and create memories. Planning a holiday that pleases everyone can take time and thought. Short-term rentals offer a unique and flexible solution that can cater to the needs of every family member, whether you’re traveling with toddlers, teens, or grandparents.

Here are some tips, including some from Belle Property’s industry experts, to ensure your next family vacation is a holiday that delivers something for everyone.

Choosing the perfect destination

The location of your holiday can make or break your trip. Keep in mind the ages and interests of each family member. Are you looking for adventures, to explore new places, strengthen bonds, spend quality time together or simply some time out in nature?

“Proximity to attractions is key’” says Kelly Bertossi, Principal Belle Property Snowy Mountains. “Whether it’s ski resorts in winter, lakes and hiking trails in summer, or nearby dining and shopping options - being close by to all that you need will only make your experience better!”

Consider the timing

An important factor to consider when choosing a holiday destination is the time of year that you are planning to travel. Think about the type of holiday your family wants – Beach? Country? City escape? If you are planning for somewhere warm – consider heading to the beach, a lake, or somewhere that promises lots of outdoor activities. Swimming, surf lessons, kayaking, yoga, horse riding, mountain biking, bushwalking, wildlife parks, fishing and local markets are just some of the many options.

The cooler months are a great time to look at a city adventure where you can explore museums or enjoy a mountain retreat with easy access to skiing, tobogganing and scenic chairlift rides. When looking at holiday accommodation in the colder months it is also important to consider somewhere with good living and entertainment spaces where everyone can spend time together out of the cold.  Perhaps a cozy fireplace for that extra special touch!

“It may be challenging to avoid peak times when travelling with kids, so consider booking well in advance to avoid last-minute price hikes,” advises Daniel Badewitz, National Escapes Consultant, Belle Property.

Allow for downtime and relaxing

While it's important to have plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained when traveling with family, choosing a property where everyone can relax and recharge guarantees a true break for all. One of the main benefits of a holiday rental for families compared to hotels is the extra space they can offer.

“When choosing a family holiday rental, consider the space and layout to ensure there is enough room for everyone to relax comfortably. Look for family-friendly amenities such as multiple living areas, spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, entertainment areas like undercover decks, and laundry facilities for added convenience,” continues Kelly Bertossi.

Be flexible and open minded

Traveling with small children or elderly parents often requires patience and flexibility. Unexpected things can happen and it helps to be able to go with the flow.

“It’s important to find a destination that caters to everyone’s needs and is easily accessible. Logistics and travel times are key, especially with kids, as long journeys and complicated transfers can quickly become stressful. A well-chosen location ensures a seamless and enjoyable experience for the whole family,” says Antje Gruttemeyer, Escapes Manager, Belle Property Cairns.

Unlike hotels with strict schedules, holiday rental accommodation provides greater flexibility when it comes to check-in, check-outs and meal times allowing a more relaxed routine. This can make your family holiday smoother and less stressful, especially if you need to cater to nap times or hungry toddlers.

Look at added amenities

When booking a family-friendly holiday rental, consider the amenities available. A well-equipped kitchen and BBQ makes meal preparation easier. Wi-Fi and entertainment options like TVs, streaming services, game consoles, pool tables, board games, help keep everyone entertained during downtime - it can be nice not to have every day packed with activities.
